Much better than Oscars
Apparently there still remains a handful of movie fans who are tired of Hollywod (or rather – bad Hollywood) movies, and of going to shopping centers to see movies (i.e. to multiplexes), it’s nice to know that here in Zagreb, at the Tuškanac movie theater, we have the pleasure of seeing reviews by really great filmmakers. These days, it’s a Rainer Werner Fassbinder review.
I remember many years ago Fassbinder was showing at the old “Kinoteka” theater. The crowd to get tickets for “Querelle” was so thick that the glass front of the theater shattered – I was so proud to be there, as if participating in a revolt against all the bullshit we were getting served by Hollywood then – and are still being served today. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good Hollywood movie as much as anyone, but they are indeed few and far between.
So back to today, or rather yesterday. We went to see “Lily Marleen”, and tonight it’s “Veronika Voss”. After the Fassbinder review, another great director featured is Andrzej Wajda. Aside from the older films, next Wednesday there is a premiere showing of his new one, “Katyn”.
Going to a normal movie theater – even buying popcorn outside, there’s no huge sign saying “Carrying your own food into the theatre is not allowed!” – and watching really good movies… Well apparently it doesn’t take much to make a guy happy!
